The Ghost Town of Pentedattilo

Pentedattilo is a deserted village in southern Italy that has been abandoned since 1971. It is situated in Calabria, close to the Ionian coast. However, in recent years, the village has experienced a revival.

The village of Pentedattilo got its name from the Greek word “Pentedáktylos,” which means “five fingers.” The name refers to the rocky hill that resembles a hand overlooking the village. In 1971, the villagers moved to a newly built village located one kilometer downstream, and Pentedattilo was evacuated.

The best view of Pentedattilo and its cliff is from the outdoor theater in the new village.

The appearance of Pentedattilo is perfectly magical, and repays whatever trouble the effort to reach it may so far have cost.

From the old town of Pentedattilo, you can see a beautiful view of the Ionian coast and Mount Etna. There is a small square in front of the church, and from a narrow alleyway leads to restored houses which host local shops, workshops, and guesthouses.

Behind the church, there is a steep path that goes to the ruins of an old castle. The castle was destroyed in the earthquake of 1783, but some parts of the walls are still connected to the rock.

The Massacre of the Alberti Family

On Easter night in 1686, the Baron of Montebello and his soldiers attacked the castle of Pentedattilo. They killed Marquis Alberti and many members of his family.

From that night of blood, Pentedattilo never recovered. The massacre is described on Wikipedia. You can find the tomb of the Marquis Alberti in the side aisle of the church of Saints Apostoli Pietro and Paolo.

Pentedattilo is a popular place in Calabria. Some parts of the village have been restored and made safe. The village hosts the Pentedattilo Film Festival every year, and in August, the Paleariza festival, which celebrates Greek-speaking culture, also takes place there.
