The ancient village of Brancaleone Superiore is located on the top of a hill in Calabria region, southern Italy. From up there is possible to look over a vast stretch of Ionian coast. During its history, Brancaleone was repeatedly struck by earthquakes and landslides. In 1951 the old village was finally abandoned. The inhabitants moved to the coast where the new town of Brancaleone Marina had risen. The ancient village of Brancaleone is now a ghost town.
Old Roghudi (Roghudi Vecchio in Italian) is a ghost town in Calabria region, southern Italy. The inhabitants were shepherds and farmers. Floods and landslides forced people to abandon Roghudi forever in 1971. The old ruins of Roghudi still cling to the rock overlooking the Amendolea river.
Pentedattilo is an abandoned village in southern Italy. This veritable ghost town clings to the slopes of a big, hand-shaped rock. It’s one of my favorite places.
