Trabocco Turchino

The trabocco is a fishing machine connected with a narrow footbridge to the mainland. A fishing net is attached to its long antennae. When the fish pass over the fishing net, it is pulled up to catch it.

The trabocco Turchino ─ the one the photo ─ is a historic one. It is mentioned in a novel by Italian writer Gabriele D’Annunzio. Also for this reason this trabocco was rebuilt after a violent storm destroyed it a few years ago.

There are many trabocchi along the Trabocchi Coast in Abruzzo region, Italy. It is no longer convenient to fish in this way in Italy so most of the trabocchi have been turned into fish restaurants.

Fishing in the Big Blue

“The sea, the great unifier, is man’s only hope. Now, as never before, the old phrase has a literal meaning: we are all in the same boat.” – Jacques Yves Cousteau

Fishing is a hard job. Yet I have always envied fishermen.

I took this photograph 10 years ago. It is the Tyrrhenian Sea. I took the photo from the cliff near Scopello, Sicily. I like the texture and color of the sea on this image. I like the sea.

The Sun in the Net

Trabocco Pesce Palombo

Costa dei trabocchi, Abruzzo, Italy

So there! Finally, the sun rises from the quiet waters of the Adriatic Sea. It was a beautiful morning with no wind. The sea was calm. I moved a few steps to place the sun right behind the fishing net of the Trabocco Pesce Palombo in Fossacesia. So that the sun truly seems caught in the net.

Trabocco at Dawn

Trabocco is a wooden fishing platform typical of Abruzzo region, Italy. There was a time that entire families lived of the catch of a Trabocco. Alas, nowadays fishing on a Trabocco is no longer profitable. So many of these Trabocco were converted into fish restaurants as the Trabocco Pesce Palombo in Fossacesia.

To take this photo I had to face a tough early rising. I arrived when it was still dark. With the first light the color of the sky and the sea began to change quickly with various shades of blue and orange. After placing the camera on the tripod I started shooting photos.I shoot this frame at 4:56 am, almost half an hour before the rising of the sun.

A tip for shooting at dawn: the night before prepare coffee thermos to bring along next morning.

Trabocchi Coast

A trabocco is an old fishing machine made of a platform with cabin. From the platform two long arms stretch out supporting a huge fishing net. Pulling up the net will catch the fish. This wooden structure is connected to the shore by a narrow bridge. I like to photograph trabocchi. There are many of these to photograph in the Trabocchi Coast in Abruzzo region, Italy.
