Gate to Nowhere

Lake Garda, Italy

Black and white photo of a pier with gate in the mist on Lake Garda, Bardolino, Italy.

I walk along the pedestrian path between Bardolino and Garda. Fog hangs heavy, and the cold stings my face as I pull my jacket closed around the camera. Things arrive slowly: a darker band that might be shore, a line of water that appears and disappears. Nothing holds for long.

A pier opens between two gates. The wood is damp underfoot, the metal cold to the touch. I follow the lines forward. The water is there, then not. There is no clear edge where the lake ends, no point to aim for.

I stop at the end. The fog keeps going.
