After sunset, the Accademia Bridge fills with people, all waiting for the perfect light. I’m one of them. We press together along the railing, cameras poised to capture the Grand Canal.

I set up my tripod for long exposures—much to the irritation of those nearby.

Someone even kicks it, deliberately.

The lights curve away, and for a moment, everything holds still.
