Masua, Sardinia
The road wound through stone: Provincial Route 83, cut into the cliffs.
Around a bend, the sea opened into a quiet bay. Along the shore stood the abandoned buildings of the old Masua mine.
In the water, a white rock rose like the back of a whale. For a moment, I thought it was alive, moving under the blue water.
They called it Pan di Zucchero, Sugar Loaf. At 133 meters, it was the tallest sea stack in the Mediterranean.
It was first recorded in the 18th century. Its name was inspired by the peak in Rio de Janeiro.
